Exploring the Economic Geographies of International Students in Siena

Our team recently had the privilege of attending the 2024 Royal Geographical Society conference in London, where we presented our research on the everyday economic geographies of international students in Siena. This research, conducted through participatory mapping and citizen science, uncovers the unique challenges and contributions of international students within the local community. With a focus on housing, social integration, and the economic impact of international students, our findings highlight the growing importance of international mobility in higher education.  One key takeaway is that international students in Siena contribute significantly to the local economy, with an estimated impact of over €42 million annually. However, challenges like housing shortages, administrative bureaucracy, and discrimination persist. Our presentation sparked meaningful discussions about how universities and local authorities can better support these students and foster a more inclusive environment.  We’re excited to continue this conversation and explore practical solutions that enhance the experiences of international students, not only in Siena but across global higher education landscapes.
